Food after mouth surgery/ After Surgery Care in Downey

After oral surgery, soft foods are key. You should stick to soft, clear foods to promote healing. For the first day or two after surgery, you should stick to a diet of clear liquids and broth. As healing begins and pain begins to subside, you can move up to soft foods that will not break down to smaller particles such as yogurts, mashed potatoes, cooked cereals, applesauce and similar. If you must strain these foods to get rid of small particles, do so. In addition to preventing food particles from getting trapped in the wound, these foods are great for upset stomachs, which may occur a day or two after surgery.

A-1 Home Care recommends trying out one of many delicious soft food recipes. We love:

Paula Deen's "The Best Bread Pudding"
Ingredients

2 cups granulated sugar
5 large beaten eggs
2 cups milk
2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
3 cups cubed Italian bread, allow to stale overnight in a bowl
1/2 cup packed light brown sugar
1/4 cup (1/2 stick) butter, softened
1 cup chopped pecans

For the sauce:

1 cup granulated sugar
1/2 cup (1 stick) butter, melted
1 egg, beaten
2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
1/4 cup brandy

Directions

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Grease a 13 by 9 by 2-inch pan.

Mix together granulated sugar, eggs, and milk in a bowl; add vanilla. Pour over cubed bread and let sit for 10 minutes.

In another bowl, mix and crumble together brown sugar, butter, and pecans.

Pour bread mixture into prepared pan. Sprinkle brown sugar mixture over the top and bake for 35 to 45 minutes, or until set. Remove from oven.

For the sauce:

Mix together the granulated sugar, butter, egg, and vanilla in a saucepan over medium heat. Stir together until the sugar is melted. Add the brandy, stirring well. Pour over bread pudding. Serve warm or cold.

Post Surgery or In Hospital Care for Downey Seniors

Phytochemicals are chemicals found in plant foods. "Phyto" means plant. Some phytochemicals have been studied for their potential anti-inflammatory benefits and their ability to prevent recurrence.
  • Soy. Soybeans contain phytoestrogens. These are weak estrogen-like compounds. Soybeans (also called edamame), tofu, soy milk, and miso soup all contain these phytoestrogens.
  • Antioxidants. Many vegetables, fruits, nuts, and other foods contain antioxidants. Examples of specific foods with antioxidants include broccoli, liver, and mangos. Antioxidants protect your cells from damage from "free radicals."
  • Beta-carotene. Beta-carotene gives carrots, apricots, yams, and other orange-colored vegetables and fruits their color.
  • Lycopene. Lycopene is what puts the red in tomatoes and the pink in pink grapefruit. It might also help prevent recurrence of inflammation.
