Be Prepared - Hire a Caregiver

If you're like most people, you would rather not think about the possible options available after experiencing any kind of accident or disaster. Many people would prefer to avert their attention to the more optimistic possibilities that can arise out of any situation. It's an understandable attitude, but one that will not help once an accident does hit. And though we, from A-1 Home Care, wouldn't wish any ill outcome for anyone, we certainly do understand that disasters can happen. We've learned that and much more from serving LA and OC residents since 1991 and one of the most important lessons our clients show us is that it is always good to be prepared.

Imagine if an accident struck you or your loved ones. Whether it's something like a sports injury or an injury from an incident on the freeway, it will undoubtedly be more difficult to go about your daily life in the next few days or months. Traveling around the house and outside will no longer be as simple as stepping out the door. Instead it could be exhausting and downright painful. That's why residents in Downey are prepared for such incidents and call us right away to assign them an in home or live in caregiver. Trained to administer After-Surgery Care, care for sports injury or Respite Care, our 24 hour in home helpers are capable of handling whatever case heads their way.

Senior Care with Fun Summer Actitivies

With summer in full tow, it’s hard not to get excited about the activities that are available this season. There’s hiking, swimming, and all sorts of outdoor activities that are available, but what about for seniors and the elderly? Because their bodies may not be physically able to endure such outdoor events, they may feel a little isolated from the norms of summer fun, but it doesn't have to be that way. There are many ways to enjoy the summer with elderly loved ones and here are some of them:

DIY Projects:

DIY is great for bonding with your senior loved ones. DIY (or do-it-yourself) can range from knitting to somewhat more complicated projects like photo magnets.

Walking:
Take a stroll on the beach or a round in the park – Not only could this benefit your loved ones as a form of exercise and physical therapy, it’s also a nice time for catching up!

Storytelling :
This takes literally no effort from both parties and it’s also a chance to let your loved one shine. Learn a little more about what it was like to grow up in a different time and make new memories at the same time!

A-1 Home Care and its staff & caregivers know all about the issues concerning seniors and the elderly, including the need for companion care, the potential for Alzheimer’s and Dementia and the demand for in home and 24 hour care. We dedicate ourselves to proving quality and professional home health aides to live in and service the elderly in their homes. Not only do we promise professional senior caregivers, but we promise to deliver all facets of care, including but not limited to Parkinson’s Care, Diabetic Care, Heart Attack care and more.

If you are interested in our services, check us out in Downey In Home Care and like us on Facebook. Call our office at  562 929 8400 to inquire about senior caregivers.

Arts & Crafts Day Trip to Downey Care Center!

This afternoon, a few of us from A-1 Home Care- Jackie from Marketing, Janette from Recruiting, and Hanna from Social Media, went to Downey Care Center to lead an Arts & Crafts lesson with the elderly residents there. We understand that while staying at a convalescent hospital isn't all fun and games, it's refreshing to take a dip in the creativity pool and lose yourself in art.

Everyone gathered around to decorate tasseled bookmarks. We used markers, patterned cardstock, glitter stickers, and foam stickies to make customized artworks. Everyone decided between keeping them for themselves or giving one away as a gift for a friend.

We made friends!

At the end, A-1 Home Care has a tradition of raffling names for a great prize at the end. Betty the winner was so surprised to win this great basket of cookies, cheeses and other snacks. We were thrilled to see her smile so widely!

Glaucoma Awareness Month/ A-1 Home Care Downey

Glaucoma describes a group of eye conditions that affect vision. It may affect both eyes and each eye may progress in a variable way. The primary feature of glaucoma is high interocular pressure. This increase in pressure may cause progressive damage to the optic nerve and loss of nerve fibers. Vision loss may result. Advanced glaucoma may even cause blindness.

Not everyone with high eye pressure will develop glaucoma, and many people with normal eye pressure will develop glaucoma. When the pressure inside an eye is too high for that particular optic nerve, whatever that pressure measurement may be, glaucoma will develop.

A-1 Home Care provides trusted in home eldercare in the cities of Downey, Norwalk, Lakewood, La Mirada, Cerritos, Long Beach and other cities in the Los Angeles County and Orange County. Our agency is A+ rated with the Better Business Bureau and has provided care for seniors since 1991.

Food after mouth surgery/ After Surgery Care in Downey

After oral surgery, soft foods are key. You should stick to soft, clear foods to promote healing. For the first day or two after surgery, you should stick to a diet of clear liquids and broth. As healing begins and pain begins to subside, you can move up to soft foods that will not break down to smaller particles such as yogurts, mashed potatoes, cooked cereals, applesauce and similar. If you must strain these foods to get rid of small particles, do so. In addition to preventing food particles from getting trapped in the wound, these foods are great for upset stomachs, which may occur a day or two after surgery.

A-1 Home Care recommends trying out one of many delicious soft food recipes. We love:

Paula Deen's "The Best Bread Pudding"
Ingredients

2 cups granulated sugar
5 large beaten eggs
2 cups milk
2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
3 cups cubed Italian bread, allow to stale overnight in a bowl
1/2 cup packed light brown sugar
1/4 cup (1/2 stick) butter, softened
1 cup chopped pecans

For the sauce:

1 cup granulated sugar
1/2 cup (1 stick) butter, melted
1 egg, beaten
2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
1/4 cup brandy

Directions

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Grease a 13 by 9 by 2-inch pan.

Mix together granulated sugar, eggs, and milk in a bowl; add vanilla. Pour over cubed bread and let sit for 10 minutes.

In another bowl, mix and crumble together brown sugar, butter, and pecans.

Pour bread mixture into prepared pan. Sprinkle brown sugar mixture over the top and bake for 35 to 45 minutes, or until set. Remove from oven.

For the sauce:

Mix together the granulated sugar, butter, egg, and vanilla in a saucepan over medium heat. Stir together until the sugar is melted. Add the brandy, stirring well. Pour over bread pudding. Serve warm or cold.

Post Surgery or In Hospital Care for Downey Seniors

Phytochemicals are chemicals found in plant foods. "Phyto" means plant. Some phytochemicals have been studied for their potential anti-inflammatory benefits and their ability to prevent recurrence.
  • Soy. Soybeans contain phytoestrogens. These are weak estrogen-like compounds. Soybeans (also called edamame), tofu, soy milk, and miso soup all contain these phytoestrogens.
  • Antioxidants. Many vegetables, fruits, nuts, and other foods contain antioxidants. Examples of specific foods with antioxidants include broccoli, liver, and mangos. Antioxidants protect your cells from damage from "free radicals."
  • Beta-carotene. Beta-carotene gives carrots, apricots, yams, and other orange-colored vegetables and fruits their color.
  • Lycopene. Lycopene is what puts the red in tomatoes and the pink in pink grapefruit. It might also help prevent recurrence of inflammation.
